Robert Downey Jr. is set to re-enter the Marvel universe after a five-year hiatus, but not as the iconic Iron Man. This time, he will take on the role of Dr. Victor Von Doom, a significant villain in the Marvel comics.
Downey Jr. is slated to appear in "Avengers: Doomsday," scheduled for release in May 2026, and will continue the role in "Secret Wars," which is expected to hit theaters a year later. The announcement was made during the San Diego Comic Con event.
In a dramatic reveal at Comic Con, Downey Jr. appeared on stage hidden behind Doctor Doom's signature mask and green cloak before revealing his identity to an excited audience.

Speaking to reporters, Downey Jr. shared his enthusiasm for the role, saying, "I enjoy playing complex characters." The 59-year-old actor was pivotal in launching the Marvel Cinematic Universe, starring in its debut film, "Iron Man," in 2008. His last appearance in a Marvel film was in 2019's "Avengers: Endgame."
Earlier this year, Downey Jr. won an Oscar for his role in "Oppenheimer."
The Comic Con event also saw the introduction of new stars to the Marvel franchise. Marvel plans to release three more films in 2025 before the Avengers make their big-screen return.
In "Captain America: Brave New World," Harrison Ford will replace the late William Hurt as General Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross. Florence Pugh will take on a leading role in "Thunderbolts," and Pedro Pascal will debut in "The Fantastic 4: First Steps."
Despite generating $30 billion in box office revenue, the Marvel series has seen profits slow in recent years. However, the recent success of "Deadpool & Wolverine," starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, has sparked hopes of a resurgence, with the film making $96 million on its opening day.
Last year, Marvel dropped Jonathan Majors, who played the villain Kang the Conqueror, following his conviction for assault.
